Lecturers from the Agro-Industrial Technology Study Program, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Udayana University, Educate the Peguyangan Kangin Com

Denpasar – Lecturers from the Agro-Industrial Technology Study Program, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Udayana University, in collaboration with students of the Period XXXII 2026 Community Empowerment Learning (KKN-PPM) program, held a socialization event titled "Processing Household Used Cooking Oil Waste into Water Candles." The event took place at Banjar Purnama Asri, Peguyangan Kangin Village, North Denpasar District, on Sunday (March 1, 2026), and was attended by 85 participants from the Banjar Purnama Asri PKK women's group.

This educational activity featured lecturers from the Agro-Industrial Technology Study Program as keynote speakers to provide the community with an understanding of the importance of wise household food management and eco-friendly kitchen waste utilization. This initiative is also part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), specifically in the aspect of community service.

Before the session began, the KKN Student Coordinator for Peguyangan Kangin Village, I Gede Eka Nugraha Baskara Putra, presented a brief report on the students' work program in the village. He explained that this socialization was designed to provide practical education regarding the reduction of food waste and the utilization of household waste to give it functional value.

The event was officially opened by the Chairperson of the Banjar Purnama Asri PKK, Ni Nyoman Sariani, who expressed her appreciation for the contribution of Udayana University lecturers and students in providing educational activities for the community. According to her, the material presented is highly relevant for housewives, who play a crucial role in managing food within the family environment.

During the event, the material on processing used cooking oil waste was presented by Dewa Ayu Anom Yuarini, S.TP., M.Agb., IPU., ASEAN Eng. She explained that improper disposal of used cooking oil can have a negative impact on the environment, particularly polluting soil and waterways.

“Used cooking oil, which is often considered waste, can actually be utilized into useful products, such as water candles. Besides helping to reduce environmental pollution, this activity also opens up opportunities to transform household waste into simple products with functional value, which even have the potential for economic development,” she stated.

In addition to the presentation, the activity included a hands-on workshop on making water candles. During the practical session, participants were invited to try the production process under the guidance of KKN students. The enthusiasm of the participants was evident through their active involvement during the practice and discussions regarding the management of food scraps and used oil at home.

The socialization was also supervised by the KKN Field Supervisor, Ir. I Gede Arie Mahendra Putra, S.TP., M.TP., IPM., ASEAN Eng., who emphasized the importance of higher education institutions providing education and practical solutions for the community.

“Community service activities like this are an essential part of the university's contribution to encouraging changes in community behavior toward wiser consumption patterns and sustainable household waste management,” he remarked.

Through this activity, the lecturers and students of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Udayana University, hope that the community will begin to adopt wiser habits in food management and creatively utilize household waste in an environmentally friendly manner. This program is also in line with the theme of the 2026 Udayana University KKN, which is sustainable waste management based on community empowerment.
